Women's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi Uniform

What is a Women's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi?

A women's BJJ gi is designed specifically for female practitioners, with proportions that accommodate women's body shapes and fit requirements.

Women's BJJ gis are tailored to fit the female form, with adjustments for chest, waist, and hip proportions that differ from men's gis. The uniform consists of the same three components as men's gis: a heavy cotton jacket, reinforced pants, and a belt indicating rank.

The jacket is cut to accommodate broader shoulders relative to waist size and provides proper coverage for the chest area. The pants are designed with women's hip-to-waist ratios in mind, ensuring a comfortable fit that doesn't gap at the waist or restrict movement.

Women's gi sizing typically follows the same A-size system (A0 through A5), though the size ranges are adjusted for women's average proportions. A2, A3, and A4 are the most common sizes for women. The fit should allow full range of motion while being tight enough that opponents can't easily grab excess material.

Finding the right women's gi can be challenging as many brands offer limited women's sizing. Our guide helps you identify brands that provide proper fit for your unique proportions.

Essential information about competition rules, care, and materials

IBJJF Competition Rules

International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Standards

IBJJF competitions have strict uniform requirements to ensure fairness and safety. Your gi jacket must reach at least halfway down your thighs when standing, with sleeves reaching the wrist bone when arms are extended forward. There must be 2-4 inches of space between the gi and your body when grabbing the lapel, and pants must reach the ankle bone. Only white, blue, or black gis are permitted in competition. Your belt must be tied correctly and match your rank. Patch regulations are limited, so check current IBJJF guidelines. The gi must be clean, in good condition, with no rips, tears, or excessive wear. Pre-competition inspections ensure compliance with these standards.
